Should we get rid of our Washed King or savour the experience?

You can order a projector from Amazon and get it the next day now or you can access an online course that fasttracks you to get a B1 certificate in any language. Other than these respectable achievements, today, we have reached a level of technology that enables people to get over such things that could be considered a catastrophe in the last century. To get to the point, a huge injury was considered a career ending accident in the context of sports in the 90s, 00s and even 10s. However, due to enormous advancement in sports medicine, we see a decline in time necessary to come back from an injury. (related example here) and Kevin Durant coming back from ruptured achilles.

It would be a fallacy to consider every aspect of these advancements a great step forward. To exemplify, one can (and should in my opinion) miss the time you must go to a store on the street next to your residence to get a projector or go to a language course with people like yourself surrounding you. Today, you cannot find a store or a course like that in most of the areas even if you want to. Therefore, these types of situations force people to accept no other than a banal and simplified experience. To get over this (while enjoying tech advancements in our day-to-day life of course) people started to look for alternative ways of doing and experiencing things. The increase in the sale numbers of old records or CDs and people starting to develop another nostalgia for another decade in every year passing are great examples.

In the context of sports, we see great athletes coming from injuries (like I mentioned before) and player playing till their 40s today. These are all great but I realized that the abovementioned nostalgic feeling struck here too. I realized I wanted to watch a clear and foreseeable ending to a career again. I want to see washed Adrianos, Allen Iversons, and Tony Fergusons again. At this point, the king of being washed comes into the picture. I have a great sense of acquaintance when I watch the performance of Mauro Icardi for Galatasaray this season.

Mauro Icardi reached his peak when he was playing for Inter, people thought his glorious days were over, and he came to Galatasaray and became one of the most important figures in the club’s history. Fans sang chants for him and he immediately was the star of the show. The Argentinian striker suffered an ACL rupture while pressing the opposing goalkeeper during a UEFA Europa League match against Tottenham on November 7, 2024. After that everything changed. From that incident, he has been increasingly losing his greatness he had not so long ago and also the love he receives from the fans. Of course, it is a depressing situation for one of the greatest scorers of his generation. However, it can also be considered as a familiar (to the greats before him) great ending to a heroic career.

I think fans should be grateful for being able to witness the second rise and eventual fall of this legendary player. Also, I think Mauro Icardi should be very happy to be able to end his career like all other greats before. Of course he would have wanted to have a career like Lebron James or Tom Brady but he should recognize that he fought and should die like a true warrior.
